L’Oréal Hong Kong Unveils New Sustainability Goals in line with the Group’s 2030 Ambitions

Hong Kong, 26 November 2020 – L’Oréal Hong Kong today announced new sustainability targets for its local office and retail operations in line with the Group’s global sustainability ambitions of “L’Oréal for the Future”. These determined sustainability goals are aimed at spurring stronger and more inclusive green operations within the beauty industry amid climate challenges.

In the context of growing environmental and social challenges, L’Oréal is accelerating its transformation towards a model respecting planetary boundaries globally and reinforcing its commitments in areas such as energy transition, plastic reduction and greenhouse gas reduction in every market where it operates:

  • By 2025, all L’Oréal’s sites will have achieved carbon neutrality by improving energy efficiency and using 100% renewable energy;
  • By 2030, 100% of the plastics used in L’Oréal product packaging will be either from recycled or bio-based sources;
  • By 2030, L’Oréal will reduce by 50% per finished product, compared to 2016, its entire greenhouse gas emissions.

The Group’s global sustainability ambitions will be made possible by efforts from every market, exemplifying local work and milestones of success. In Hong Kong, the company announced industry-leading goals under two strategic pillars of Green Office and Green Retail based on the local operations model.

1. Green Office:

  • L’Oréal Hong Kong office has been using 100% green electricity since January 2020 and is the 2nd biggest local buyer of Renewable Energy Certificate from Hong Kong Electric;
  • The office uses 100% responsibly sourced paper (FSC certified paper) and obtained LEED gold certification with features such as occupancy sensors that automatically reduce lights, temperature and other energy output as well as the use of sustainable furniture and office supplies.
  • Through collaboration with the office landlord and environmental NGOs including V Cycle and A Plastic Ocean, L’Oréal Hong Kong office’s energy use was reduced by 22% compared with 2016 and office waste was reduced by 25% compared with 2019. The company is looking at further year-on-year reduction targets in both energy consumption and waste generation;

2. Green Retail:

  • L’Oréal Hong Kong is taking important steps to minimize plastics used in local product delivery. By 2021, all plastic fillings, tape and wrappings used in local delivery to stores and direct to consumer deliveries will be replaced by non-plastic eco materials or paper. Plastic fillings and tapes have already been eliminated in the company’s local delivery to all stores in 2020;
  • By 2021, 100% of the company’s new stores and renovations will be eco-designed to provide more sustainable points of sales, a further step up from the 86% eco-design rate currently achieved;
  • The company will expand existing packaging recycling schemes to more brands and stores in 2021, and launch new consumer education initiatives on the importance of recycling and sustainability.

“At L’Oréal, the way we do business is just as important as financial performance. This is what motivates us to always go the extra mile,” said Eva Yu, President & Managing Director of L’Oréal Hong Kong. “The challenges the planet is facing are unprecedented, and it is essential for all businesses to accelerate our efforts to preserve the environment for our society and future generations. As the leader in the beauty industry, we want to be exemplary. We will continue to collaborate with our NGO partners and other stakeholders in driving green beauty in Hong Kong with industry-leading measures.”
