L’Oréal Citizen

The Employee Citizen Engagement Program

L’Oréal has a long tradition of employee volunteering initiatives. Since 2010, the Citizen Day has allowed L’Oréal employees to dedicate a full day of their work time to supporting a non-profit social or environmental organization.

From this, L’Oréal has continued to innovate in terms of employee citizen engagement programs and has developed L’Oréal Citizen, a program that offers the possibility to contribute to causes through different ways, such as the Payroll Giving Program and Hackathons for good.

Each year, L’Oréal employees around the world have opportunity to support non-profit social and environmental organizations during their work time.

Employees can get involved in various initiatives, such as renovating non-profits’ premises, production of hygiene kits or collecting waste.

In 2019, for the 10th edition of the Citizen Day, a total of 27,600 employees volunteered, helping 969 non-profit organizations in 61 countries. This represents 156,200 hours volunteered.

In 2020, in spite of the global pandemic, 7,587 employees were able to volunteer, through new digital initiatives that complied with sanitary rules.

In 2021, during our international solidarity day, most of 16,411 employees involved were able to reconnect with the traditional format of Citizen Day. It took place on the ground, in direct contact with non-profit organizations and their beneficiaries, with a total of almost 650 different solidarity assignments. When health measures did not allow in-person engagement, Citizen Day was able to reinvent itself and allowed for new forms of engagement through hybrid or remote participation models.

Launched in 2018 in France, the Payroll Giving program allows employees to donate the cents from their paycheck to a non-profit organization.

In France, this donation can be supplemented with an additional donation ranging from 1 to 20 euros. L’Oréal doubles employee donations (up to an amount of €100,000 every year). For instance, the total amount of donations to the NGO Planète Urgence has made it possible for the organization to plant 157,000 trees since the beginning of the partnership.

To date, 3 countries have already adopted the Payroll Giving system, including the US and the Japan.

In order to help our partner non-profit organizations reinvent their model and adapt to the crisis, employees had the opportunity to take part in a series of digital Hackathons* for good alongside employees from other companies. This new initiative gives them the opportunity to put their skills to good use and serve the general intrest.

In 2021, 2 Hackathons for good took place, during which 24 employees got involved, in order to help 2 non-profit organizations.

*Inspired by traditional Hackathons, or programming marathons – events during which IT developers meet for a given period of time to work on a collaborative project – Hackathons for Good are collective intelligence seminars, where participants from different backgrounds, work as a team for 2 days on the strategic challenges of associations.

“Having a positive impact on society and supporting disadvantaged communities is a source of pride for all our employees across the world. L'Oréal believes that it is its responsibility to provide employees with the means to take action and to provide a valuable contribution, because every action helps when it comes to today’s social and environmental challenges.”
